When you have a little bundle of joy but feeding is anything but joyful, what do you do?

All too often, moms blame themselves when feeding is difficult.

Baby is often assumed to handle their part of the deal without any problems. Moms are told to keep trying or give up and get formula.

Spoiler alert: sometimes babies have struggles with eating.

No, Mom, you're not crazy.

To relax and enjoy a good meal, babies must coordinate:

  • Rooting
  • Sucking
  • Swallowing
  • Breathing

For some babies, this comes naturally. Others, not so much.

When a baby has tension in the head, neck or upper chest, it can cause dysregulation in the vagus nerve, which can irritate these pathways and create challenges. That is why it is critical to achieve balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. A baby stuck in sympathetic drive - or ‘fight or flight’ mode may struggle to settle into a calm, organized feeding rhythm.

Chiropractic helps shift the body into a more relaxed, parasympathetic state where feeding becomes easier and more coordinated. That’s the foundation, the next layer is the mechanics of the latch. What makes a good latch? The structures of the mouth moving together and functioning correctly.

Dr. Amanda listens to parents about both their and their baby's experiences and performs a physical assessment to determine next steps.
